Trend Legend Saint Laurent Brought To Life In Biopic: Friday, June 6th 2008 - the roads of Paris were brimming with citizens, all gathered to pay their respects in the funeral of couturier Yves Saint Laurent (YSL). To Lespert and Niney, Yves Saint Laurent's attempts are heroic and, as with many artists that are tormented, therapeutic.
It's also a love story - that of Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge, whose up-and-down relationship shows the "dark, sombre face" of a man who at times plunged into melancholy, drugs and alcohol, and was unfaithful. Saint Laurent, who expired in 2008 aged 71, ruled the international couture scene in the swinging 1960s, revolutionising women's wardrobes with a fresh androgynous style that mirrored girls's push to get a stronger social function.
Yves' legend was directing that into his meticulously sketched and conceived sets, first as assistant to Christian Dior, then at his own house that was founded by Berge's determination and business skill just as much as Saint Laurent's formidable ability. There is a poignant scene in the movie where Saint Laurent tells Berge he would never have made it without him and Berge answers that Yves' ace would have discovered a means to make it regardless.
His movie is an intimate love letter to Yves Saint Laurent and a sincere attempt to capture a few of the complexity of their relationship. But it is also YSL according Berge and, as with all writers of history, he comes out of it nicely: the patient, tolerant parent to the wayward prodigy kid. And the Colours of Yves Saint Laurent gallery, where guests will appreciate energetic examples from hundreds and his groups of cloth samples.
Obtaining the approval of the controlling Berge meant the filmmakers had unparalleled use of the Saint Laurent archive - 5000 dresses, 15000 accessories and 35000 sketches (unlike a second YSL movie slated for launch later this year which has already been put on notice from Berge who has threatened to sue if so much as a sketch is replicated because film). Yves Saint Laurent the movie is the darker side of Fashion fame as well as a mixed narrative of unbelievable success. But Saint Laurent gorged.
